This week I am continuing with some thoughts on the conflict in Ukraine:
Second Amendment
I am a strong believer in the importance of the second amendment in the US. I rarely see anyone in America make a thoughtful defense of the second amendment – it’s usually as sophisticated as “stay away from my guns!” or “somebody shot people so we need to take the guns!”
I see the Bill of Rights as enshrining the rights of everyone, including those in minority groups or a position of weakness. It protects individuals from the government.
The government is a very powerful entity. Maintaining the power of individuals in the face of government overreach is critical. An armed population helps to even out the balance of power. That doesn’t mean it is without problems. But is one way of evening things out.
In Ukraine, the citizens are taking up arms to help protect the country against Russian invaders. Democrats who I follow on Twitter are cheering on this rag-tag army, even though they would never cheer on gun ownership in America. So what is the driver of this? Will the conflict in Ukraine lead more Americans to rethink their stance on gun control and the importance of the second amendment?
